Graphic Design 103: Alignment

Many people align their lives around objects. Some around jobs. Some money. Or God.

Whatever proves important to us becomes the focus of our attention. We align our schedules around what we value most. Everything we do pushes us closer to whatever we most love.

Alignment proves important to our lives. But it also proves important to how we see life. More specific, alignment is essential to the visual arts.

Graphic designers understand the principles of good alignment. In her book, The Non-Designers Design Book, Robin Williams discusses how good alignment strengthens a graphic design composition. A strong left or right edge can help the design fit together. It can help guide the reader and make the advertisement visually attractive.
